Canada Reads 2008: My rankings.

This is how I think Canada Reads should finish up (winner first). It probably won't but hey, I was right last year. Maybe they'll surprise me again.

1. Not Wanted on the Voyage – Timothy Findley
I can't believe I got this far in my life without reading this book. Brilliant.

2. Icefields – Thomas Wharton
It's about a glacier and glaciers are cool.

3. King LearyPaul Quarrington
It has hockey-loving monks! And it made me cry.

4. Brown Girl in the Ring – Nalo Hopkinson
It was a tough call between this book and King Leary. Brown Girl gets bumped down because of a particularly gruesome scene that may give some people nightmares. **see note below

5. From the Fifteenth District – Mavis Gallant
I think eliminating a book simply because it's short stories is dumb. For me, this would be the first book booted because I didn't care about any of the characters in any of the stories. It may be well written but it just didn't do anything for me.

**Edited to add:

I gave a lousy reason for putting Brown Girl in the Ring in fourth place. There are far more horrifying scenes in Not Wanted on the Voyage. My only excuse is that I had just finished Brown Girl so the scene was fresh in my mind. I still think I placed it properly though.
