Maybe lack of sleep affects hearing....
The kids and I enjoyed the Christmas break, even though it felt more like spring than Christmas. We stayed up late and slept in late pretty much every day and, as an obvious result, this morning was painful. So painful that L, who got maybe two hours sleep last night, had to stay home today. The younger two went and seemed to be glad to be back.
I got a call from the school about mid-morning and the secretary said, "Hi. This is [the school] calling for Safe Arrivals. J isn't coming to school today?" I said he should be there, that he'd walked with K and if she was there, he was there. She said, "Ok, let me check with the teacher. Hang on." She came back on the line a few minutes later, said that the teacher had made a mistake and marked the wrong student absent, and she apologized. Thanks for the minor heart attack.**
When J came home from school, I asked him if he had a substitute today. He said no, not a substitute, a new teacher. I asked him if she was nice and he said she was ok. Then he said that she told the class that for the first part of the [school] year she had been "teaching the retards". Ummm... excuse me? "That's what she said!"
She cannot have said that. He must have misheard. If I run into her at the school on Wednesday, I may have to ask for clarification.
**It would have been a major heart attack but this isn't the first time it's happened.
