All Canadians are great.

I watched the premiere of The Greatest Canadian tonight and I was astounded by some of the people who made it into the top 50. Or maybe I should say I was dumbfounded. Apparently, my definition of "greatest Canadian" varies from a large segment of the population. I was mostly impressed with the final 10, however. Bell doesn't belong on the list but my favourite is there, the one I've said should win from the moment I heard about this competition. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

The best moment of the show was when someone (I forget who) said, “This is why we don't run the country by referendum.”

I wrote down the names of the top 40 finalists. Didn't think to do it for the first 10 and since the final 10 are listed on the CBC's site, here's the middle 30:

40. Avril Lavigne
39. Bret Hart
38. Mario Lemieux
37. Tecumseh
36. Ernie Coombs (Mr. Dressup)
35. Laura Secord
34. Hal Anderson (radio DJ from Winnipeg who got himself voted in by his listeners)
33. Gordon Lightfoot
32. Michael J. Fox
31. Pierre Berton
30. Rick Hansen
29. Jim Carrey
28. Sir Isaac Brock
27. Celine Dion
26. Norman Bethune
25. Nellie McClung
24. Arthur Currie
23. Maurice Richard
22. Harold A. Rogers
