Directed by: Mike Leigh
Starring: Imelda Staunton, Richard Graham, Eddie Marsan, Anna Keaveney, Alex Kelly, Daniel Mays, Phil Davis, Lesley Manville, Sally Hawkins
Synopsis: Unbeknownst to her family, a woman is performing illegal abortions in England in the 1950s.
I really like Mike Leigh's movies. His characters are natural and they speak and act in completely realistic ways.
I've now (finally) seen every movie that was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 2004 and I can say, without any hesitation, that Staunton deserved to win. Swank was good in Million Dollar Baby but not nearly this good. The moment when the always-smiling Vera stopped smiling was particularly powerful.
Great acting in an extremely moving film that made me cry. Highly recommended.
